Before leaving Germany for Austria after flowing for around 600 km, the Danube passes through an impressive gorge on its final stretch. This striking valley, located in the district of Passau and the province of Upper Austria, is one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Central Europe.
The slopes of the Danube, known as the Donauleiten, can rightly be described as one of the most species-rich regions in Germany. The heterogeneous structure of the slopes creates a small-scale mosaic of steep, dry hillside forests and moist, cool ravine forests. There are also special locations such as bare rock faces and vegetation-free boulder fields. Due to the function of the Danube and its tributaries as migration corridors, species from the Alps, the low mountain ranges, the eastern steppe regions, and the Mediterranean region can also be found here. The high diversity of reptiles is of particular importance for Germany. These include species such as the Aesculapian snake and the eastern green lizard, which are common in southern and southeastern Europe but extremely rare in Germany. Many other species, especially those that love warmth, also find a home on the slopes. And in the context of climate change, new species from southern Europe are constantly migrating to the area. The Danube itself is also home to numerous fish species, some of which are rare. These include the only population of Danube sturgeon that reproduces in Germany. Last but not least, the islands of the Danube are also important habitats.
The Danube also played an important role in the settlement and political development of Central and Southeastern Europe. The numerous castles and palaces bear witness to this period. As a trade route for numerous goods, including salt, the Danube was of enormous importance. Passau, the center of the Danube Valley, benefited greatly from the trade at that time.
Today, the beautiful landscape and idyllic location of the Danube Valley invite visitors to go hiking and cycling. For example, you can explore the region’s special features and enjoy the impressive views at your leisure on a leisurely hike.
